In this body of work Surf Manor Adult Home, Erica McDonald photographed various residents at the New York facility. “These cramped rooms are nearly identical, but the people who live in them are highly individual.” Many have been diagnosed with mental illness.

McDonald has provided ample text with many of her projects; I appreciate her awareness of the situations surrounds her subjects. I wonder how long she spent with the individuals in this series? I would like to know more about the individuals…perhaps that would be an interesting development to the work.

Some great portraits, but I want more…especially around the contrast between these identical living spaces for highly differing characters.
